The Arc of Justice and other Forces

On March 31st 1968 at the National Cathedral Dr Martin Luther King Jr. famously said “The arc of the moral universe is long but it bends towards justice”. His speech was titled “Remaining awake through a long revolution”. His words inspired the revolution happening in 1968 and they continue to inspire the work of the forces working in the moral universe today. The title of his speech might seem prophetic to the mainstream today, which has now recognized the truth of needing to ensure justice and equity for all, but it was born out of years of struggle known to African Americans and other minorities of the time. Today as we pause to remember Dr King’s call to action we must acknowledge the many forces that continually work in the moral universe to bend the arc. When we open our eyes to poverty, homelessness, the education gap and violence we see the oppression that is institutionally embedded in systems that perpetuates inequality for people of color and other minorities. The revolution will always need vigilance. I hope you will join me in the watch.
